BRIEF
36 days of Type is a project that invites designers, illustrators, and graphic artists to express their particular interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet. A Yearly open call exploring the creative boundaries of letterforms, where participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day for 36 consecutive days, as a global and simultaneous act showing the outcome o the ability to represent the same symbols from thousands of different perspectives. A project that aims to be a space for creation around typography and its endless graphic possibilities. For each edition, all participants share their work via Instagram by uploading their typographic interpretations of each letter and number to their profiles, wile using the projects hashtag plus the daily hashtags to submit their work and enter the challenge.
MY WORK
I have tried before to take part in this challenge but never was able to see it to completion. I would get to about the letter ālā or wherever and miss a day and could fall behind only to lose momentum and enthusiasm. This time I wanted to take on a more simplified approach. I chose on specific typeface, made a base project, and created a 3D interpreted version of the typeface.
MY FINDINGS
I discovered during this process two things - people grew bored quickly, and I grew bored quickly also. Aesthetically, it looks nice on the page all together, but each day looking at the same color, the same composition, etc - overtime it lost its mojo. Bottom line is I sacrificed the uniqueness of each letter for a cohesive look but ultimately was able to see it all the way through.
CREATIVE APPROACH
At the time of this challenge, I was becoming more comfortable with subsurface scattering materials inside of Redshift and decided to test my knowledge some more by bringing it into this challenge. My goal was to get as close to the end product as I could inside the renderer without doing much in the way of post work, resulting in minimal Photoshopping after each render. Just some basic level adjustments, dodging/burning, and sharpening.
